So, I want to tell you about last Friday! I went to Kaengesa Seminary to celebrate the feast of St. Joseph. The seminary is located about 1 hour away from Sumbawanga, up in the mountians. There is a boys boarding school there as well. The overall day was really fun. After a good mass (with an amazing choir), we sat outside for 2 hours and had all sorts of entertainment by the students. The students did different traditional dances from various regions of Tanzania. There was african drums and singing. There was even an acrobatic show! It was so neat. Then, after a huge lunch with about 30 brothers/sisters from around the area, we watched a student soccer game then headed back home around 7:30. It was really need to watch the tradtional african dancing and listening to the signing ... a very cool cultural experience! Here are a few pictures!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to start my day--I just caught up on your last 3 or 4 blog postings over a cup of coffee and I must say that my day is all of a sudden looking brighter (despite some pretty ugly clouds heading my way over the Atlanta skyline).
I got to see your parents about a month ago when they were passing through Atlanta on their way back from Florida. They are so proud of you and are SO excited to see you in Africa....Wait a second, I (underline/ capitalized) am so excited to see you in Africa! We're coming along with our travel plans but we're still keeping our fingers crossed for a Victoria Falls reunion (tentative dates look like Jun 9 - Jun 11...)
Your blog really is amazing, SaraBara. Without knowing it, you are really touching people, and everyone in different ways. Some people might pick up a book tonight instead of turning on the t.v. Someone else might take their shoes off next time they're at the park to feel the dirt between their toes. Someone else might strike up conversation with a stranger they might otherwise not have. For Whitney and I, you've given us the right "glasses" to take with us on our own journey to Africa.
Keep the pictures and stories coming, Sarah, and can't wait to see you in a few months time!

Kim and Bode arrived home Monday evening and are doing well. I'm going back up there on Wednesday (Kim's birthday) and will stay a week. I can't wait!!

By now Iam living and working in West Africa Sierra Leone as an agricultural specialist.I enjoyed to see the pictures cause I know all of those places. I was the head of various projects there including the construction of the pond of Wagaba named. some p'ple I can rmember who were with me are Father Batromeo Bachoo,Deo Kapufi,Anastazius Mpwiniza now a teacher Meta sec.in Mbeya.I will pass to see Kaengesa in March by the grace of God wheen Iam in my holiday love you all keep the hope living

ReplyDeleteMy wife and I were US Peace Corps volunteers in 1985 and became friends with Karl and Beata Waldinger that were German volunteers in Sumbawanga. They had a school that taught brick making and masonry. We have lost touch with them and thought you might be able to give us some advice on how find them again. We enjoy your blog, it brings back good memories. Best wishes on your experience.

ReplyDeletedo you remember "special" (vitengo maalum), during work hours people used to go to their "special" , i remember one of my friends (1988 -1991), who used to play piano very well, when students are told to go to their special places , he will go and star playing piano.
